In one recent example, we were recruited by the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in a civil rights case involving prisoners’ rights. The client was a young male detained in Cook County Jail for three years pending trial. He entered Cook County with a gunshot wound – the bullet had traveled through one arm and lodged in the other arm. Despite the continuing presence of the metal slug in his body and suffering severe pain from nerve damage, the detainee was taken off the medicine needed to alleviate the pain. We sued on his behalf and resolved the predicament to the young man’s satisfaction.
